Thirteen reasons Why: A story about chosing life or Death
Important Characters & Plot:
In this book one of the main characters is Clay Jensen, he is a shy man who was a freshman in high school who was also afraid to talk to girls, but that's like everyone(17). Anyways, Clay is one of the victims in Hannah Bakers cassette tape trail. He was confused about why he was in this cassette tape trail(8-10). Hannah and Clay barely knew each other and the only time they met or talked was when they bumped into each other in the school hallway or at a party(211). The day Clay found those tapes was when he was coming home and he saw this box on his front porch, so he took them inside and started listening to them in his garage(5-7).
Another main character is Hannah Baker, she was a freshman in high school who was all popular and was involved with a lot of drama(125). She had a lot of fake friends who just wanted to be cool. She was also nominated into a lot of stupid contest like "Nicest Butt" or "Nice Lips"(37). Hannah was getting tired of all the crap she was getting from people so she gave up and committed suicide and sent out tapes to everyone, for the reason why she committed suicide(7-12).
Important Themes and Symbols: Cassette Tapes
The purpose for these cassette tapes was to tell the people that they were the reason why Hannah Baker committed suicide and that really stirred things up with a lot of people and also gave them a scare too(14-15). These tapes in the book talked about a lot of people and what they did to Hannah Baker to make her feel and look that way(157). It also showed so much frustration in people because they wanted to know why they were in this trail but it always made people feel disappointed in them because Hannah gave them a reason why(218-219).
The purpose for the cassette tapes in society was to tell the readers that it's not right to make tapes and send them out to people that made you do this. The best thing is to not even do that because that's the wrong way to go and the things you grieve you need to tell someone about it. The cassette tapes tell us about how Hannah Baker felt about her classmates/friends and how they were some of the reason why Hannah committed suicide. Having those feelings can make you do things that you can't understand and the best way to find an out is to talk to someone or look for the best of things not the worse. These tapes show was the wrong way to find an out of our mixed emotions.
